note from me : hi guys ! this is an article i’d written for empower magazine recently! decluttering is such a simple yet a highly effective practice.
Who is Marie Kondo?
- Picture this: you’re bored and scrolling through Netflix. Chances are you’ve already come across “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” and “Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo.”
- Her bestselling 2014 book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” expands more on the KonMari method of decluttering
To clutter or not?
- Following the KonMari method, Decluttering is a simple practice: take each item, hold it in the palm of your hand and ask yourself- “Does this item spark joy?”
- If the answer happens to be yes, then the item’s a keeper.
- If the answer happens to be no, discard the items with a small ceremony. Thank the item for its service and discard it.
Folding and Tidying items
- It’s not just about discarding items, it’s also about folding them.
- The next time you fold, make sure your clothes depict neat rectangles.
- The KonMari method encourages tidying not by place, but by category- books, clothes, shoes etc.
- Not only is the method effective, it also is mindful, forward-looking and introspective.
Home is where the heart is
- Minimalism advocates living with less while KonMari Method advocates for living with what you cherish.
- The KonMari Method allows you to imagine your ideal lifestyle- what items do you truly need?
- When you free yourself from physical clutter, you mentally declutter as well.
- The method urges you to listen to your inner voice: the question of what you want to own is the question of how you want to live your life.
Will you be using the KonMari method anytime soon?
